Growth Hormone Deficiency

Background

Growth hormone deficiency is a condition where your body doesn’t make enough growth hormone. Growth hormone is needed for development and growth. It helps maintain healthy muscle mass and bone density, and controls how the body breaks down fat.  The most common symptom of this condition in children is that they grow more slowly and are shorter than other children of the same age and gender.

Causes

Causes of growth hormone deficiency in children and adults include:

  • Being born with it
  • Developing it because of a brain injury, tumor or radiation therapy
  • Unknown causes

Treatment

The treatment for this condition is growth hormone replacement therapy. There are many different brands of growth hormone, but all contain somatropin. Somatropin is a man-made growth hormone that is similar to the kind that your body makes. This medication is injected under your skin as directed by your doctor. Make sure to properly dispose of your needles in a sharps container. We can provide one for you if you need one.
